Raising awareness about ALS
As a proud partner of The ALS Association, we share The ALS Association’s mission of raising awareness about ALS. BAYADA understands that raising awareness about ALS is crucial to enhancing the lives of people with ALS. That’s why we participate in many Walks to Defeat ALS and other local ALS events, participate in advocacy events throughout the year.
2014 marked the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig’s Farewell speech, which made the world aware of ALS.
BAYADA encourages you to spread awareness about ALS! Below you will find several talking points to raise awareness about ALS:
- ALS is commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, because Lou Gehrig, the hall-of-fame baseball player for the New York Yankees, was diagnosed with ALS in 1939. Click here to learn more from our partners, The ALS Association
- Veterans are approximately twice as likely to develop ALS as the general population, regardless of their era of service, or whether they served during a time of war or peace. BAYADA works with local Veterans Administration offices throughout the country. Click here to find a VA near you. Click here to learn about Veteran benefits through the VA.
- A study published in 2012 in Neurology, which is the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, states that National Football League (NFL) players have higher rates than the general public to develop and succumb to diseases that damage brain cells. The study showed that NFL players are approximately four times as likely to die from ALS as the general public. Click here to learn more about this study from The ALS Association.
